Brushing and flossing aren’t the only things to think about when it comes to protecting your teeth. There are times that, like other body parts, your teeth need to be covered too. Depending on what you’re trying to safeguard your smile against, there are a few different types of mouthguards that you can consider.

Bite Splints

People who tend to clench and grind their teeth — a condition we call “bruxism” — often experience TMJ problems, headaches, broken dental work, and chipped teeth. A bite splint creates a small amount of space between your upper and lower teeth, so that your jaw can’t fully engage. It prevents tooth wear and strain to the muscles around your TMJ.

Athletic/Sports Mouthguards

A well-made athletic guard can protect you against knocked out or chipped teeth, broken jaws, or even a concussion. The thicker material hugs your teeth so that it doesn’t fall out if you get hit or fall, limiting the risk of injury from secondary trauma too.

Sleep Guards

If you suffer from sleep apnoea or snoring, our Somerville dentists can talk to you about the types of sleep guards that are used in lieu of CPAP equipment.

Over the Counter Guards

If you’re in a rush and on a budget, you can find one-size-fits-most guards available online or in the grocery store. Unfortunately, they don’t offer a truly customized fit, so they’re typically more uncomfortable to wear (and fall out easier, posing a risk of injury.)
