Tooth Extraction

In most cases we prefer to save the tooth rather than extract it, which we would do so by means of root canal therapy or a dental crown. Most of our tooth extraction procedures are for wisdom tooth removal.

What is a tooth extraction?

A tooth extraction is a dental procedure whereby the tooth is removed from the dental socket in the jaw. At Somersmiles we treat extractions as a last resort, turning to this procedure only if a tooth has become unrestorable due to tooth decay, gum disease or trauma. In most cases, our tooth extraction procedures are performed on wisdom teeth which often become impacted, which means they are unable to grow normally, resulting in pain and infection.

Oral surgery

If during our dental assessment we detect a pathology we are concerned about, we may refer you to an oral surgeon. An oral surgeon is someone who specialises in surgery of the mouth, face and jaw, who can perform more complex dental procedures. If you require a more complex procedure, your oral surgeon will work together with the Somersmiles Dentistry team to complete your treatment plan. In most instances, tooth extraction can be completed by your Somersmiles dentist and will not require oral surgery.

What is the tooth extraction treatment process?

At Somersmiles Dental, patient care is our top priority. Our entire team is committed to making your tooth extraction procedure as efficient and comfortable as possible.

01. Treatment consultation

Before your procedure you will have a consultation with your dentist and treatment coordinator to assess what dental work is required and to discuss the various options for ensuring your comfort during the procedure. These options include local anaesthetic, happy gas or even sleep dentistry where a state of twilight sedation is induced. We encourage you to read more about Sleep dentistry here. During your consultation you’ll have the opportunity to ask any questions and sign a consent form before proceeding.

02. During your treatment

A tooth extraction is a relatively straightforward procedure which we aim to make as quick and comfortable as possible:

First and foremost, we take the necessary steps to minimise any discomfort in accordance with your treatment plan, whether that be local anaesthetic, happy gas or sleep dentistry sedation.

The tooth is then removed as gently as possible using specialised instruments. Occasionally, we may divide the tooth into pieces and/or make a small incision in the gum - this is known as surgical extraction.

03. Following your treatment

After your tooth extraction has been completed, we will provide you with a post-procedure care and recovery information sheet as well as a take-home care pack including prescription medicine, gauze and mouthwash.
