Top 3 Causes for Bad Breath!

Feb 25, 2022

Do you find yourself prone to bad breath? This is quite a sensitive dental concern for most of our patients but our dentists at Somersmiles Dental are more than ready to help pinpoint the underlying cause, as well as suggest some remedies for it!

Apart from eating some troublemaking foods such as garlic and dairy products, here are some dental issues that can give way to bad breath:

Dry Mouth / Xerostomia

This is a condition that occurs when your salivary glands don’t make enough saliva to keep your mouth moist. This can be caused by a number of different issues. For example, most medications cause dry mouth as a side effect. Mouthwashes, too, contain alcohol, which is known for drying out your soft tissues and causing dry mouth.

Dry mouth creates a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria to flourish creating an odor that simply won’t go away! Our dentists have various treatments for this depending on the underlying cause of your dry mouth but we also recommend sipping on water regularly throughout the day to keep yourself hydrated.

Gum disease / Periodontitis

When the areas deep under your gumlines are infected, you’ll find your mouth gives off a distinct odor that can’t be covered up. The only way to take care of this problem is to have the bacteria cleaned out entirely by a professional. Taking care of the infection and any affected tissues left behind will help give you fresher breath.

Not cleaning your tongue

Did you know your tongue houses up to 90% of the bacteria that leads to bad breath? If you forget to clean your tongue each time you brush or floss, this leads to a significant buildup of those bacteria over time. Make it a point to brush your tongue from back to front to get rid of any odorous bacteria and you might find your breath to be significantly better.

Schedule a consultation with our experts at Somersmiles Dental and we’ll outline the ways in which you can get fresher, healthier breath!
