How to Treat Cracked Teeth

Feb 24, 2022

Did a misadventure or freak accident leave you with or suspecting a cracked tooth? Treatment options for this usually depends on how severe the crack is and where precisely it’s located. Here are the treatments you can expect at our Practice:

Bonding / Filling

Your teeth are a porous substance; hence it’s a natural tendency for them to soak up stains from all the food and drinks we consume. Certain drinks such as coffee, red wine, and black tea are some prime reasons for those stains on your teeth.

Dental Crown

Moderate cracks usually can’t be filled over. If there’s no underlying structural damage, we recommend getting a dental crown to protect your tooth from everyday wear and tear like biting and chewing. This will stop the crack from getting any worse.

Root Canal

If you have a deep crack that extends further into the tooth, this requires a more intensive approach as bacteria can now enter your nerve chamber and cause a painful abscess. You cannot cover this with a filling or crown as that will seal the infection in, allowing the crack to keep running further down your tooth. Root canal treatment will help remove any damaged pulp to prevent your tooth from weakening further.

Extraction

Consumption of tobacco, either by smoking cigarettes or even by chewing gum can contribute to staining your teeth. Long term use can put you at higher risk of various oral health issues including gum disease.

Environmental factors

If the crack extends to the root of your tooth, this will cause severe pain every time you chew. If your tooth is split in two, we recommend having the entire structure extracted before there is any consequential damage to the neighboring teeth and tissue.
